Winter Black Hair Care Tips

The winter season is finally here again! And as exciting as thoughts of snow, Christmas and skiing trips might be, winter is never kind to black hair. We have compiled a list of must do's and can do's for those of you still undecided on how to protect your hair this winter.

Tip 1: Moisturize, moisturize moisturize; as much as possible...there is nothing like too much moisture for your hair. The dry winds of winter can cause breakage and dryness in black hair. Incorporate the virgin olive oil pre- shampoo method into your weekly hair routine. Simply part your hair into two or four and pour in a bowl of olive oil from your kitchen:). Dip a finger in the bowl of oil and finger roll the hair strands starting from the nape. This helps to keep your scalp and hair tips moisturised and fortifies the hair against breakage.

Tip 2: For intensive daily moisturizing, we recommend Profectiv Long & Healthy , it is a heavy moisturizer that definitely leaves your hair soft and shiny.

Tip 3: Style your hair in protective styles. Pack your hair back or up in bun styles, get a weave done or braid your hair up in long lasting styles. If you chose to wear your hair au natural do not forget to moisturize your hair tips daily.

Tip 4: Skimp on the shampooing. Yes! reduce the number of times you shampoo your hair; condition instead. Depending on your routine; alternate your hair shampooing with what we call a "conditioner poo". Wet your hair and apply a generous amount of conditioner, rub in as though shampooing and rinse out. This is an essential moisture guaranteeing process for winter hair care.

Swearing by Profectiv

This blog post is going to get personal ! In a good way :-)!

Now for those who know me well in person, I do have a happy, wild head of kinky afrolicious hair, and I do get a few inquiries on what my hair regime is like.

So, I decided to write a personal hair post today to answer a couple of customer questions like "I've never seen this product before, how do I know its good?". One thing I can always say and I always do say is - we don't sell products we wouldn't use on ourselves. So, all our products are carefully selected from our own experiences or customer recommendations and intense research into the product ingredients too.

At the moment I succumbed to a relaxer treatment a few weeks ago after another transitioning stint (i.e going from relaxed hair to a natural afro ). But I am still a firm believer in stretching your relaxer (i.e waiting longer periods in between relaxer treatments).

I've always had a problem with relaxing my thick hair to the bone straight look till I found the Profectiv range of relaxers. Still, it didn't just make my hair bone straight, it gave it shine and lately I used one of the Relax and Refresh colour packs, and I am still very satisfied!!

Now I have to digress a bit from Profectiv, a topic for another day is conditioning and shampooing hair regimens. I love the Elasta QP line of shampoos and conditioners and it stretches my hair satisfactorily well too.

Back to Profectiv; one of our best selling products is the Profectiv Mega growth oil : it smells good, and it conditions superbly; both natural and texturised relaxed hair. I hear testimonials all the time, apart from mine :-)! I always recommend this product as a hot oil treatment for those with dry, weak , damaged hair, it can't get any better than this!

But tonight's winner is the Profectiv Long N' Healthy Anti-Breakage Strenghtening Mega Moisturiser....this stuff is wonderful !
Its light, fruity, and ultra moisturising. I use it for my hair tips on dry hair and on wet hair before roller sets. As written on the bottle it works excellently well with styling gels, setting lotion, mousse & spritz products, and that is the truth verbatim.

This moisturiser is also brilliant on natural or coarse hair, because its less greasy, it is water free , contains no petroleum and effectively conditions the hair in a matter of seconds......so yes I am recommending Profectiv. I hardly experience hair breakage using their wonderful products. I am very very happy with my hair and I want you to be too !!

On that note, I am swearing by Profectiv, very much so !!

P.S We are looking forward to stocking a new range of organic hair care products. By organic I do mean completely natural hair ingredients. Watch this space !!!

Maintaining your child's hair

Pic courtesy Soft n Free

Isn't it ever so cute to see little children with well coiffed heads, all neatly combed and each strand in place!!

Well we all know how tasking it is to achieve that with black nappy or biracial curly hair. EbonyPrague believes its a matter of cultivating a healthy hair regimen. Using the right products and having a consistent routine that pampers your child's hair will go a long way.

  • Shampoo wash hair at least once a week, and using light conditioners such as the Elasta QP creme leave -in conditioner so as not to weigh down their soft hair.
  • Use a detangling frizz spray such as this when combing or taking out plaits to avoid not just the tears but also reduces hair loss.
  • Try to use a jumbo comb, it helps to avoid the typical kinky curl knotting process.

Are you sitting there thinking, "But I've tried all that, my child's natural hair is just tough and unmanageable"?

Well have you considered relaxing your child's hair. It is chemically possible and safe to apply a relaxer on black hair from the age of six, but some would rather stay away till age 14 (when the baby hair phase is complete).

Remember, you don't have to aim for a bone straight relaxed look with your child. What you should be trying to achieve is a better texture for manageability. You can consider texturising rather than a full relaxer treatment. Using the texturising method is much milder than a typical relaxer application. Texturizing can be done on both black nappy hair and bi-racial curly hair.

We currently stock a budget size Soft N Free N Pretty Child Double Kit Relaxer .Formulated with ESP (Extra Sensitive Protection) Soft n'Free n'Pretty helps to protect, moisten and strengthen the hair, prevents hair breakage and eliminates itchy scalp.

We are excited about our new range of Afro picks and eyeshadows ...coming soon!!!
